Random Mats
Matatu and Tractor
$50.00
Matatu and Tractor — a category-defying design from the Random Mats collection that paired Nairobi's most iconic vehicle with a piece of agricultural machinery. The juxtaposition is playful, unexpected, and deeply Kenyan — a reminder that urban and rural identities coexist in the national consciousness. Dennis Muraguri's 2024 woodcut captures the contrast with humour and skill. This design reflects matatu culture's willingness to find art in unlikely combinations. The tractor, a symbol of Kenya's agricultural backbone, sits alongside the matatu, a symbol of urban hustle, creating a visual dialogue about Kenya's dual identity. Muraguri's carving treats both subjects with equal care. This print is perfect for those who appreciate conceptual art, Kenyan cultural commentary, or simply a well-executed visual joke. It works beautifully in a farmhouse, suburban home, or urban apartment.
